4 Caring Prayers for Self-Love

This prayer for self-love is incredibly important, God understands love for he is love and he does not want any self-loathing or harsh judgment of self to harm us.

We are told clearly in John that ‘we love because he first loved us’.

We cannot deny God’s love for us by denying our love for ourselves. For anyone who needs this prayer, it is important the word of the Lord shows them that they are so loved. Let us ask God to help us to let us feel some of that self-love and direct this prayer for ourselves and others who need this right now.

Let us pray.

Lord God, I come to you today humbly seeking your guidance and strength. I know that I am not perfect, but I am trying to love myself more and be confident in who I am.

Bible Verse for Self-Love

Powerful Prayer of Self Love

This longer prayer was originally shared with our YouTube congregation in the video above. If you would rather have shorter prayers, we have prayers for good health and prayers for a better tomorrow.

Lord, I am trying to follow your commands and love others and live a life full of love for you and find joy through that love.

You also command us to love ourselves enough, I find this incredibly hard to do.

I am finding things difficult and feel unworthy of the love of others. I fear that this is leading me to accept behaviors towards me that may be doing me some harm.

This is not following your command so I need to find a way to change it, to find some self-love.

It is hard to believe that I am worthy of your love Lord so I live my life to love others and do everything I can for them. I do not feel that I should waste any of my time on myself or expect anything from myself.

It is slowly becoming clear to me that this is as harmful to me as being vain and conceited.

I read the word of the Lord that asks of me that I love others above myself and I find this easy Lord.

I always put others first and this is true to your word when you command us to love others “Whoever loves God must also love his brother” as we are told in John. I find my love for you so strong that this is an easy command to obey.

It is through my knowledge of you Lord and my worship of your goodness and grace that I find a way to also love others.

I know you love us even when we are sinners Lord, your heart is full of forgiveness and sacrifice for others. I am learning to be forgiving because of your sacrifices.

Even when I sin I know you love me, Lord. I feel your love for me every day, it helps me bear the hardships of life.

I find it difficult to love myself and have felt that loving others is easier and more important. Putting other people’s needs first as they are more worthy of your love and kindness than am I.

If I truly accept that I am worthy of your love, then I must also accept that I am worthy of someone else’s love, including my own.

I am wrestling with reconciling loving myself as you also command in Psalms. “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made”.

I am trying to understand how to love myself. You are love God and I hear you when you ask us to love others as we love ourselves and you command us to ‘love your neighbor as yourself.

I find the first part of that easy, loving others comes easy, but I hear your teachings and accept that perhaps I could be a better person for others if I accept that I am worthy of love.

If I judge myself harshly I will judge others harshly, if I am over-critical of myself I will be over-critical of others. If I am incapable of self-love how can I understand how to love others. I cannot have a jealously held love.

I want to understand and follow your teachings and love myself enough so that my love for my neighbor will be better and more honest.

I want to be able to have more love and respect for myself so that I am more balanced in the way that I live. Help me find that love for myself, teach me how to do that.

I understand that you teach about not being vain and proud, arrogant and unholy, and I need to find a way to be none of these things but still value myself so that I can value others properly.

I find loving you Lord is easy, it is through that love that I find my daily actions and burdens made easier, living in praise for you is the way forward for my life.

Help me to find a way to love myself enough so that I respect my mind and body and treat myself as I would treat others.

This prayer for self-love is the first step in my journey towards accepting myself as worthy of love, if I am to truly embrace all your teachings Lord then I must embrace the fact that I am worthy of your love.

I say this prayer for myself that I may take the first steps toward loving myself as one of God’s creatures and I extend this prayer to all others who feel the need for some self-love.

Lord hear my prayer.

Amen.

Bible Verses and Scripture for Self Love

For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church – Ephesians 5:29

This bible verse is often misunderstood to mean that we should love ourselves above all else. However, what it actually means is that we should take care of ourselves in the same way that we would take care of someone we love.

Just as Christ nourishes and cherishes the Church, we should nourish and cherish our own bodies. This doesn’t mean that we should be narcissistic or selfish, but it does mean that we should treat ourselves with kindness and respect.

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. – Psalms 139:14

The Bible is full of verses that extol the virtue of self-love. This verse reminds us that we are each unique and special, created in God’s image.

It is a reminder to love ourselves, for we are worthy of love. This verse also teaches us that our worth comes from our relationship with God, not from our accomplishments or what others think of us. When we understand this, we can start to see ourselves through God’s eyes – as beloved children who are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves – Philppians 2-3

In a world that is constantly comparing and measuring one person against another, it can be easy to get caught up in feelings of jealousy and competition.

However, Paul reminds us that we are called to live in humility, which means regarding others as more important than ourselves. This does not mean that we should belittle ourselves or put ourselves down; rather, it means that we should recognize the inherent worth and dignity of every human being.

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself – Matthew 32 37:39
